TMC MP Jawhar Sircar: On Sunday, TMC MP Jawhar Sircar announced his decision to resign from the Rajya Sabha and withdraw from politics. In his resignation letter addressed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Sircar, a retired IAS officer, cited corruption and inadequate action against those involved as primary reasons for his departure.
Criticism Over Handling of RG Kar Hospital Incident
In his letter, Sircar expressed disappointment over the handling of the recent turmoil at RG Kar Hospital. He criticized Mamata Banerjee for not intervening directly to resolve the crisis with the agitating junior doctors. Sircar lamented that the government’s actions have been insufficient and delayed. He stated, “I have suffered patiently for a month since the terrible incident at RG Kar Hospital, and was hoping for your direct intervention with the agitating junior doctors, in the old style of Mamata Banerjee. It has not happened and whatever punitive steps that government is taking now are too little and quite late.”
Call for Action Against Corruption
Sircar further criticised the delay in addressing corruption among doctors, suggesting that prompt and decisive action could have restored normalcy sooner. He remarked, “I think normalcy may have been restored in this state much earlier, if the caucus of the corrupt doctors was smashed and those guilty of taking improper administrative actions punished immediately after the scandalous incident happened.”
Urgent Appeal to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee
Additionally, Sircar urged Mamata Banerjee to take stronger measures in response to recent rape and murder cases. He implored, “Please do something to save the state.” Sircar indicated his intention to go to Delhi soon to formally submit his resignation to the Rajya Sabha Chairman and fully dissociate himself from politics.
