The Supreme court also questioned the UP government about how the killers learned that Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were being taken to the hospital while it was hearing an appeal by attorney Vishal Tiwari for an independent investigation into their deaths. ‘How were they aware? It has been on television. Why weren’t they brought to the ambulance as soon as they entered the hospital? Why did they get paraded?’ The court inquired.

The brothers were taken for a medical exam as ordered by the court, according to Mukul Rohatgi, who represented the UP government in court. Every two days, they had to be taken for medical exams as per the court’s orders. So, he said, “the media was aware. ‘This man (Atiq Ahmad) and his entire family have spent the last 30 years involved in heinous crimes. This incident in particular is horrifying. The killers, who we caught, claimed they did it to gain notoriety,’ Rohatgi said. According to Rohatgi, the state government has formed a three-member commission to investigate the situation, and a special investigation team from the UP Police is also looking into it.
