Apple: Apple has submitted a patent for using car windscreens as augmented reality (AR) displays, with the goal of integrating virtual, projected pictures over real-world objects. While heads-up displays in cars have been available for a while, Apple’s approach takes it a step further by combining AR technology. The company plans to convert speed limit signs into radar scanners that display a driver’s actual speed in comparison to the restriction.
How difficult will it be for Apple?
According to Apple‘s patent, it is incredibly difficult to implement due of one significant issue: parallax. Cars are driven by a variety of persons, each with their own height, build, and sitting position. To get it right all of the time, the tech will have to account for a lot of this.
How will it change a driver’s perspective?
The purpose of superimposing virtual, projected pictures over real-world items elevates Apple’s implementation from HUD to AR. You can get directions in the way you used to get them in some famous games like NFS and Forza.
While AR-integrated windscreens are intriguing, it will be interesting to see whether and how Apple actually pulls it off.
