An undisclosed English businessman filed legal action against Apple, the world’s largest technology company. He claims that a major factor in his marriage failing was Apple’s management of deleted messages. The businessman says his wife found condemning messages on his family iMac that he thought had been erased from his iPhone, according to reports from The Telegraph.
Apple’s Alleged Lack of Transparency
The businessman claims that the regrettable finding was caused by Apple’s reluctance to provide precise information regarding the status of deleted messages. In the latter years of his marriage, he acknowledged using iMessage to communicate with sex workers, thinking that if he deleted the texts from his iPhone, they would be permanently deleted. After the traumatic experience, he told The Times, “If you are told a message is deleted, you are entitled to believe it’s deleted.” He regretted for the terrible manner in which his wife learned about it, and he hinted that perhaps improved communication could have prevented the split.
Lawsuit Demands £5 Million in Damages
In order to pay for his divorce settlement and legal costs, the lawsuit demands more than £5 million. Representing the businessman from the London law firm Rosenblatt, Simon Walton highlighted Apple’s purported ambiguity over message deletion. “Apple had not been clear with users as to what happens to messages they send and receive and, importantly, delete,” Walton told the Telegraph. He drew attention to the possibility that communications erased from an iPhone could still be seen on other connected devices—a detail that Apple is purportedly negligent in disclosing.
Understanding Message Deletion on Apple Devices
According to Apple, clearing out a message on one device will also clear it from all other devices that are signed in with the same Apple ID when “Messages in iCloud” is enabled. This feature guarantees uniformity amongst various Apple devices. It’s important to realise that this removal just impacts the user’s personal devices. The other participants in the conversation cannot delete the messages or attachments from their devices.
Messages that are removed are stored for 30 days in a “Recently Deleted” section. Before the 30-day window closes, users have the option to permanently remove these things. To make sure your messages are totally deleted from your Apple devices, follow these steps:
Steps to Permanently Delete Messages on Your iPhone
- Open the Messages app.
- In the conversation list, tap “Edit” in the top-left corner, then select “Show Recently Deleted,” or tap “Filters” in the top-left corner, then choose “Recently Deleted.”
- If viewing a conversation, tap the “Back” button to return to the conversation list.
- Select the conversations or messages you wish to delete permanently.
- Tap “Delete” and follow the onscreen instructions to confirm.
By following these steps, users can ensure their messages are completely removed from their Apple devices, maintaining privacy and freeing up storage space.
Tips for Managing Private Messages
Use a personal Apple ID instead of the one connected to family devices if you intend to send private or sensitive messages. By taking this simple safety measure, you can protect privacy and prevent misunderstandings.
