Apple iOS 18: The upcoming iOS 18 mobile operating system from Apple has the potential to significantly alter how we operate and interact with the iPhone. This will be Apple’s biggest software update, according to a Bloomberg story. The most recent version will be presented in June at WWDC 2024. With the release of the iPhone 16, it will be made available to the general public before the end of this year.
Apple iOS 18 expected features
App sideloading
App sideloading will be available in Europe starting with the iOS 17.4 release. With the iOS 18 upgrade, users may be able to download and install both Apple and non-Apple apps globally, but first, they will need to download and install an independent app store from Apple’s App Store.
Support for RCS
RCS compatibility, which Apple has already promised will be on the iPhone at some point this year, is another expected iOS 18 feature. Without getting too technical, Android messaging apps utilise RCS, or Rich Communication Service, as a texting protocol. This should improve and streamline communication across the two platforms, though those green and blue bubbles won’t disappear.
AI-powered Siri
With ChatGPT-like generative AI capabilities, Apple is probably going to give Siri a boost. Apple could use OpenAI’s GPT technology, which is comparable to Copilot, to power some of the next AI-backed features on iPhones, according to a recent 9to5Mac article, despite Bloomberg’s prior allegation that Apple is creating its own generative AI model. Aside from that, Apple is anticipated to bring AI-powered photo and video editing features, akin to the newest Google and Samsung flagship smartphones, to the notes and music apps.
Expected Launch details
In June 2024, iOS 18 will be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference. Following WWDC, developers will have access to iOS 18 for testing, with a public beta release anticipated in July.
In September 2024, iOS 18 will be released alongside new iPhone models, following the beta testing phase.
