Apple: Users in 92 countries, including India, have received new threat alerts from Apple. Users are cautioned by the warning message that “mercenary spyware” may have compromised their iPhones. No stakeholder has been blamed by the firm for the most recent attacks. Read on to know more.
Apple issues new warning
It had previously warned opposition politicians of a “potential state-sponsored spyware attack” on their iPhones in October of last year. These figures included Shashi Tharoor of the Congress, Raghav Chadha of the AAP, and Mahua Moitra of the TMC.
The government’s lobbying eventually forced the business to clarify that it “does not attribute the threat notifications to any specific state-sponsored attacker.”
Emails containing threat notifications were sent to affected individuals in India on Thursday, April 11, at approximately 12.30 am IST. The number of individuals who have gotten Apple’s danger notification is unknown. The email also refers to Pegasus spyware developed by the NSO Group and claims that such tools are often used to target individuals worldwide.
Indian Express was able to access new threat alerts. The notification’s subject line, according to the magazine, is “ALERT: Apple detected a targeted mercenary spyware attack against your iPhone.”
How to stay safe?
Users are warned by the company to exercise caution when clicking on links that they receive. It’s advised not to click on any links or download any files from senders you don’t know or anticipate. The business declined to elaborate on the reason behind the danger notification, though. It said that by doing this, the mercenary spyware attackers may be able to modify their conduct and avoid discovery in the future.
In order to help customers who might have been the targets of the mercenary malware attack, Apple has now updated its support page. “The purpose of Apple threat notifications is to alert and support users who might have been specifically targeted by mercenary spyware attacks, probably due to their identity or occupation,” the iPhone manufacturer stated.
