Central Government: Eighteen “over-the-top” (OTT) streaming platforms were banned by the Centre on Thursday for releasing “obscene, vulgar, and, in some cases, pornographic content,” marking the start of a significant crackdown on these platforms. Read on to know the names of the platforms.
Central Government bans 18 OTT platforms
18 OTT platforms, 19 websites, 10 applications (seven available on Google Play Store, three on Apple App Store), and 57 connected social media profiles have all been made inaccessible to the general public in India, according to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Under the pretext of “creative expression,” platforms should not spread abuse, vulgarity, or obscenity, according to Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur.
“The recent decision was taken under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 in consultation with other Ministries/Departments of the Government of India, and domain experts specialising in media and entertainment, women’s rights, and child rights,” the release said.
