Apple: Citing a severe vulnerability that poses a serious security concern, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a “high-risk” warning for users of Apple products, including iPhones, MacBooks, iPads, and Vision Pro headsets. Read on to learn more.
Centre issues High-Risk Warning for Apple users
An important vulnerability related to “remote code execution” in a number of Apple products is brought to light in the warning. Prior to particular fixes, this issue affects a wide range of Apple hardware and software, including versions of iOS, iPadOS, visionOS, macOS Ventura, Safari, and macOS Sonoma.
Using an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in WebRTC and CoreMedia, the exploit enables remote attackers to run arbitrary code on the computers they target. This implies that users’ security and privacy are seriously at risk due to the possibility of remote device compromise by criminals.
A variety of Apple hardware and software are affected by the vulnerability, including versions of Apple Safari released before 17.4.1, versions of Apple macOS Ventura released before 13.6.6, versions of Apple macOS Sonoma released before 14.4.1, versions of Apple visionOS released before 1.1.1, versions of Apple iOS and iPadOS released before 17.4.1, and versions of Apple iOS and iPadOS released before 16.7.7.
How to be safe?
If their devices are running iOS and iPadOS versions older than 17.4.1, owners of the iPhone XS, iPad Pro 12.9-inch, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch, iPad Air, iPad, and iPad mini are vulnerable, reports the warning. Users who have not updated their smartphones to iOS and iPadOS versions 16.7.7 or later run the danger of losing their iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPad 5th generation, iPad Pro 9.7-inch, and iPad Pro 12.9-inch 1st generation.
With macOS Ventura versions prior to 13.6.6 and macOS Sonoma versions prior to 14.4.1 being at risk, MacBook owners are also advised to upgrade their systems. Additionally, owners of the Apple Vision Pro headset need to be aware of the vulnerability present in visionOS versions lower than 1.1.1.
