Sony: At CES 2024, Sony unveiled a new headset designed for creating spatial content. Since it isn’t intended for gaming, this differs from the PlayStation VR2. Professionals are the primary audience for this new headset, which will assist them in creating 3D content for industrial and entertainment design. The company has not yet disclosed all of its details, including price and release date. More of a hint for what to expect when it launches later this year was given by the current announcement. In this article, we will share all we know about this upcoming headset.
Sony’s mixed reality headset details
Sony didn’t provide many details during the event, but several important specifications were revealed in a press release that was released following the exhibition. The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip from Qualcomm, which was unveiled right before CES, powers the headgear. This indicates that it is a standalone device that can function without a computer. In addition to offering “user and space tracking” for mixed reality experiences, that chip powers two 4K OLED microdisplays. While hinting at a product geared towards pros that would resemble its professional-grade cameras and equipment, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said that it will provide a “crisp viewing experience” and “intuitive interaction for 3D design”.
The gadget features six cameras and sensors in total, as well as “video see-through” capability. Two controllers were displayed, one labelled as a “pointing controller” for just that—pointing—and the other as a “ring controller” for moving items. Sony hopes that artists will be able to work on 3D models in real-time by combining the controllers with more conventional input methods like keyboards.
Price and availability details
Sony has announced that the system will launch later this year, though the precise date and cost are yet unknown. Apple’s Vision Pro, which is scheduled to release in stores next month, is a competitor. But Sony may have an advantage in this developing industry thanks to their emphasis on skilled artists and user-friendly controls.
