China: In an attempt to sabotage the next Lok Sabha elections in India as well as elections taking place in other nations including the US and South Korea, China would employ information created via artificial intelligence (AI), according to research published by Microsoft on Friday. China could use AI content to influence Central Elections
Following a test run in the Taiwan presidential election, Microsoft has warned that China may deploy artificial intelligence-generated content to influence the Lok Sabha elections in India. North Korean-backed Chinese state-backed cyber gangs will also try to target South Korean and American surveys, according to an analysis conducted by Microsoft Threat Intelligence.
“China will create and amplify AI-generated content to benefit its interests. Despite the chances of such content affecting election results remaining low, China’s increasing experimentation in augmenting memes, videos, and audio will likely continue, and may prove more effective down the line,” the report said.
The activity of the Chinese cyber actor Flax Typhoon was covered in the report. The entities it targeted were associated with the 2023 US-Philippines military exercise. Targeting organisations in the US, Hong Kong, India, and the Philippines has also been connected to this actor.
How damaging could it be?
The realm of AI-generated or AI-enhanced content has witnessed a notable evolution in Chinese influence campaigns.
Microsoft observed that these efforts to sway public opinion are growing more sophisticated. Not only do they produce their own videos, memes, and audio content to further strategic narratives, but they also enhance AI-generated media.
