Fake Police Scam: What is it?
Authorities have warned the public that con artists pose as senior IPS officers on WhatsApp in order to scare victims into thinking they are police officers. These con artists threaten to arrest victims and push them for money deposits in order to avoid this by posing as police officers. The con artists have already taken advantage of the victims when they become aware that they have been duped. As these cases continue to rise, the police have issued a public warning, urging people to report any incidents involving these cyber thugs right once.
How to stay safe?
- If you ever receive a call like this, when the police ask for your attendance in person or virtually, you have the option to request a “notice of appearance.” According to section 41A of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), a police officer may issue an analogous notice if they feel that a person who is not really in custody needs to participate. The individual is under no obligation to appear until after receiving notification. You are under no obligation to leave without notice.
- Police officers don’t usually start a video call on their own. It’s okay to ignore calls made to you by someone posing as a police officer or a police station representative.
- A female police officer is always present throughout a woman’s interrogation. If there’s no lady on the other end of a video call that you take up as a woman, end it right away.
- Trust your gut and act cautiously if something seems strange or too good to be true. If you are unsure, don’t be scared to hang up or ask for help.
