Cyber Fraud Alert: USSD Call Forwarding to be Deactivated in India to Curb Malpractices, Check Details

Cyber Fraud

Cyber Fraud Alert: The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) is taking a stand against cyber fraud. In a recent order, they’ve directed telecom operators to deactivate USSD-based call forwarding services across India. This change will be implemented nationally starting April 15, 2024.

What is USSD Call Forwarding?

USSD, which stands for Unstructured Supplementary Service Data, is a technology that allows mobile users to access phone network services by dialing shortcodes like *401#. One such service is call forwarding, where your calls are redirected to another number.

Why the Deactivation?

The DoT has identified misuse of USSD call forwarding in cybercrime activities. Scammers might trick users into activating call forwarding, diverting their calls and potentially intercepting sensitive information like one-time passwords (OTPs).

What’s Next?

While USSD call forwarding will be deactivated, the DoT assures users that alternative methods for activating call forwarding will be introduced. Existing users with active USSD call forwarding will likely be required to reactivate the service through these new methods. This is to ensure call forwarding remains under user control and isn’t activated unknowingly.

Stay Vigilant Against Cyber Fraud

While the DoT’s action strengthens India’s fight against cybercrime, it’s important for users to stay vigilant. Remember, never share personal information or activate call forwarding on your phone at someone else’s request.
