The cybersecurity firm CloudSEK claims that hackers are already actively testing an unusual kind of malware that leverages third-party cookies to obtain unauthorised access to people’s personal information. First reported on a Telegram channel by a hacker in October 2023, the exploit was first identified.

According to the investigation, third-party cookies, which websites and browsers employ to track users and improve their performance, have a weakness that might lead to the breach of Google accounts.

Furthermore, users can save their login information and log in without having to enter it again thanks to Google’s authentication cookies. But now, there’s a technique for hackers to get around two-factor verification and get these cookies back.

Simply put, this vulnerability allows hackers to access your Google account and access your personal data, including financial information, by using your expired browser cookies to go beyond two-factor verification.

Google working on a solution

As per the source, Google Chrome is presently undergoing an upgrade to strengthen its security measures and protect users from malicious websites.

Google, in a statement, said, “We routinely upgrade our defences against such techniques and to secure users who fall victim to malware. In this instance, Google has taken action to secure any compromised accounts detected.”
