Six dating app users in California have recently filed a lawsuit against Tinder, Hinge and other online dating platforms. The plaintiffs have claimed that these apps are designed for “Compulsive” use which makes them addictive and lures adults to spend their money to purchase costly subscriptions.
Lawsuit Filed on Valentine’s Day The lawsuit was filed on Valentine’s Day itself in the Northern District of California. The lawsuit’s file says that these dating platforms are designed with addictive features like games. It also mentions that these apps have features that “lock users into a perpetual pay-to-play loop” which is intended to generate more profits than searching for compatible partners.
What Exactly The Lawsuit Says
“Match’s business model depends on generating returns through the monopolization of users’ attention, and Match has guaranteed its market success by fomenting dating app addiction that drives expensive subscriptions and perpetual use,” the lawsuit says.
What This Lawsuit Means for Online Dating Platforms
The recently filed lawsuit keeps adults at the centre stage which can lead to an increased investigation and scrutiny of their potential to put adults in a state of stress and depression when they fail to find their match even after paying high costs for purchasing premium subscriptions.
Some time ago, some similar lawsuits were filed against Meta for optimizing Facebook and Instagram as an addictive app that attracts users to spend more time on their applications.
These dating platforms, according to the lawsuit against the company, “employs recognized dopamine-manipulating product features” to convert users into “gamblers locked in a search for psychological rewards that Match makes elusive on purpose.”
