Disney Plus to not let users to share passwords like Netflix
Disney chief financial officer Hugh Johnston stated during a corporate earnings call on Wednesday that Disney Plus users “suspected of improper sharing” or those who sign up using someone else’s account will have the chance to sign up for their own membership. According to him, the business would begin preventing customers from sharing passwords in the summer of 2024, beginning in March.
Disney intends to implement a new feature that will enable account holders to add individuals who reside in separate households for an additional price, even though the company will also prohibit users from using other people’s accounts. In a similar vein to how Netflix charges an additional fee to people who wish to sign up for accounts from outside their home.
Why are companies taking this step?
The fact that password sharing severely affects the profitability of streaming services, such as Netflix and Disney, is one of the main reasons these companies have begun to prohibit password sharing. Password sharing is a big factor in these companies’ profit struggles, just like it is for other digital titans. Their revenue is impacted since password sharing reduces the number of paying subscribers. They hope to significantly boost their revenue by turning password sharers into paying clients. Following the implementation of the crackdown, Netflix reported gaining 9 million new members.
