TRAI: In order to auction off a number of spectrum bands and radio waves covered by permits that are set to expire in 2024, the Department of Telecom is likely to approach industry regulator Trai this week.
The auction will likely take place in the current fiscal year’s March quarter.
DoT to Approach TRAI for the auction of new spectrum bands
According to a source who spoke on the record under the condition of anonymity, the DoT is getting ready to refer to the TRAI in regard to both the 2024 telecom licence renewal deadline and the auction of the 37 GHz band.
The reference will also probably mention the auction of spectrum in the 600 MHz band and the frequency that went unsold in the previous auction, which was held in 2022.
In the previous auction, the government reportedly made spectrum in ten bands available; however, no bids were submitted for the airwaves in the 600 MHz, 800 MHz, and 2300 MHz bands.
A little over two-thirds of the bids were placed for the 3300 Mhz and 26 GHz 5G bands, while over a quarter of the demand came from the 700 Mhz band, which had not been purchased in the two prior auctions (in 2016 and 2021).
In order to include the satellite communication frequency in the auction scheduled for the March quarter, DoT anticipates TRAI to soon submit auction parameters for that spectrum.
However, just one satellite communication player has called for the administrative distribution of spectrum rather than using the auction route.
