Elon Musk: The social media giant X, which Elon Musk owns and which was formerly known as Twitter, is experimenting with a new clickbait ad structure. The new unidentified ads on the platform, which are presently available on the company’s mobile app, differ from standard X ads in that they do not bear the “ad” label and instead display in the user’s “For You” feed and send them to a third-party website when they attempt to click on them. Elon Musk‘s X displaying clickbait ads
Users of X now reportedly see “unlabeled ads in their feeds” as they scroll, according to Mashable. There is no mechanism to filter or report this advertising, when people click on it, it directs them to third-party websites. The report stated, “The new ads also don’t disclose who the advertiser is or that they are even ads.”
“Multiple X users have reached out to Mashable over the past few days to report seeing a new type of ad in their For You feed that they had not previously come across on the platform”.
Users cannot like or retweet the posts of these new X advertisements. Additionally, the new ad structure hides the ad’s sponsor. The investigation said that the ads appear to be consistent with ads found in spammy, low-quality ‘chumbox’ advertising in terms of the type of content being advertised. These advertisements are currently being shown to users of the X mobile apps.
The reason behind this move
X has worked with third-party marketers to address the issue of diminishing ad income. These new ads are distinct from regular ads, which are simply postings from X accounts with the word “Ad” attached. The platform may currently have 200–250 million daily active users, according to X CEO Linda Yaccarino, who also predicted that the business will turn a profit by the beginning of 2024.
