File Management App: Security experts found two malicious file management apps on Google Play with a combined install base of over 1.5 million that gathered unnecessary user data that goes far beyond what is required to deliver the stated functionality. Without the user’s involvement, the apps from the same publisher can launch and start stealing private information and sending it to servers in China.
The two apps are still accessible in Google Play as of the time of publication, despite Google receiving complaints about them.
What did the Security Experts say about the File Management Apps
Pradeo, A Cyber Security Company stated, “Our engine detected two spyware hiding on the Google Play Store and affecting up to 1.5 million users. Both applications are from the same developer, pose as file management applications and feature similar malicious behaviours.”
“They are programmed to launch without users’ interaction and to silently exfiltrate sensitive users’ data towards various malicious servers based in China,” it added.
According to Security researchers, “both spyware collected very personal data from their targets, to send them to a large number of destinations which are mostly located in China and identified as malicious”.
What do the apps do?
The strangest thing about spyware programmes is that they stealthily collect useless data, which is done without the user’s knowledge.
The apps use the compromised rights to work covertly in the background, reboot the device, and hide their icons from the home screen of the harmed device, making uninstallation challenging.
