On Tuesday, tech-giant Google was hit with a class-action lawsuit for allegedly scrapping data of millions of users. Google violated copyright laws in order to develop and enhance its AI(Artificial Intelligence) products. As per the allegation by California based Clarkson Law Firm. Google “has been secretly stealing everything ever created and shared on the internet by hundreds of millions of Americans,” to train its AI. The firm also complained that Google has acquired absolute access over the entirety of our digital footprint.
“Transparent privacy policy“
Case was filed against Google, its parent company Alphabet, and Google’s AI subsidiary DeepMind in a Federal Court in California.
The same company that sued Google also filed a case against ChatGPT maker OpenAI last month. So far, representatives from any of the Google subsidiaries or parent company has refused to comment on the situation. The complaint pertains to Google’s recent update of Privacy policy that says that the company may use publicly accessible information to develop it AI model and other tools like Bard. Google has responded that its privacy policy was always transparent in regard to use of publicly available information and the newer update confirm its application over new services such as Bard.
‘publicly available’ has never meant free
Tim Giordano, an attorney at Clarkson law firm has said that “Google needs to understand that ‘publicly available’ has never meant free to use for any purpose.” The suit seeks to temporarily freeze commercial access of AI tools. The company has eight plaintiffs and also wishes to draw compensation over stelaing and scrapping of data from millions of users. He further added it would’ve never been imagined by people that “their information would be used this way.”
The AI tools have gained a lot of traction in recent months to create written work and pictures with training from vast stock of data available online.
