An assessment by a Twitter user showed that Realme phones come with an “Enhanced Intelligent Services” feature which enables gathering of device information, app usage statistics and other user info. After this, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar has said that the government will “have it tested and checked.” The minister of state made this statement by retweeting the original tweet, featuring screenshot and accusations against Chinese smartphone giant. The original tweet was shared by user Rishi Bagree, known for sharing polarizing content on social media.
Enhanced Intelligent Services feature
The “Enhanced Intelligence Services” feature has ambiguous language explaining its function and has invasive features to it. The feature is reported to be turned on by default on the Realme 11 Pro device of the company. Similarly, OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite also appears to share similar characteristics. Even privacy settings on Samsung Galaxy S20FE reveal that even the South Korean company has the tendency to enable a similar “Send diagnostic data” option by default.
Allegations directed against China
Bagree mentioned in his tweet that “Enhanced Intelligent Services” is on by default and implied that information and data of Indian users including call logs, SMS and location info is being sent to China. Realme comes under the large umbrella of Guangzhou-based Company, BBK electronics which also owns Vivo, Oppo, OnePlus and iQoo; all major Chinese phone brands sold in India. These companies have dominated the Indian mobile market despite growing towards Chinese companies amid deep geopolitical strain between both nations.
