Apple: The European Union’s Digital Markets Act, a comprehensive new law designed to increase competition from smaller businesses in the domains of digital advertising, online search, and app ecosystems, is mandatory compliance for the biggest technology corporations in the world as of this week. In this article, we will tell you how the EU laws will change iOS as we know it.
How Will the EU Laws Change iOS?
Ability to delete Safari
EU iPhone customers will soon have the option to fully uninstall Apple’s Safari web browser from their devices. Because Safari is so closely linked with the iOS operating system, it is currently uninstallable. Nonetheless, Apple is required by the DMA to permit customers to uninstall any pre-installed programmes.
Third-party app stores and payment options
Perhaps the most significant modification is that Apple can’t compel developers to distribute iOS apps exclusively through the App Store in the EU market. Developers will be able to evade Apple’s stringent app review guidelines and controversial 15–30% commission on digital sales by using third-party app stores, which will become legal.
For digital transactions and mobile apps, Apple will also support payment methods other than Apple Pay. The iPhone’s NFC chip will be available for contactless payment app developers to utilise.
Transferring data to Android made easier
To facilitate data transfers and allow users to move to Android or other mobile operating systems, DMA is also required for iPhone users. The ability to migrate data across platforms is something Apple claims to be working on, but it won’t be available until late 2025.
Web Browser option
The EU version of the iPhone will allow users to select their favourite web browser during the setup process, which is one of the most noticeable changes. Users will see a selection of web browsers accessible in their market, like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and others, instead of being forced to use Apple’s Safari browser by default.
