Instagram: Reels, or short movies, are now one of the most widely shared formats on Instagram. In India alone, millions of producers apparently post an average of six million Reels every day on the Meta-owned service, which has about 2.35 billion monthly active users worldwide. The app does not currently offer a way for users to download their Reels, despite the enormous popularity of its video option. But this is no longer the case because Instagram has now introduced a new function that enables users to download Reels from public accounts.
Reel download feature on Instagram
Reels can now be downloaded directly to devices for Instagram users in the US, according to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri.
“In the US, we’re rolling out the ability to download reels shared by public accounts to your camera roll. Just tap the Share icon on a reel you love and select Download. Worth mentioning, Reels shared by private accounts can’t be downloaded and public accounts can turn off the ability for people to download their reels in Account Settings.”
How to download reels?
Users must open the reel they wish to download, tap on the sharing icon, and then choose the download option.
The app will offer a choice to turn off the ability to download Reels, giving authors more control, though. In this approach, people who do not want their followers or other people to download their Reels can stop it.
Mosseri did not explain whether downloaded Reels would be watermarked, but the image he shared suggests that it would do so and feature the user name and the Instagram logo, much like TikTok does with downloaded videos.
Despite only being accessible in the US for the moment, the function is anticipated to be made available elsewhere, including in India.
