iPhone 14: With its Emergency SOS via Satellite feature, the iPhone 14 saved the lives of two women, all you need to know

iPhone 14: If you hike, climb mountains, or climb rocks often, you’re used to putting yourself in dangerous situations in places where no one else is around. In an emergency, it’s almost impossible to get in touch with anyone for help. This is why Apple has a feature called Emergency SOS via Satellite. In fact, the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature on the iPhone 14 has saved the lives of two women for the second time.

Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite feature saved the lives of two women

The Canadian newspaper Times Colonist said that Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite feature saved the lives of two women who got lost after Google Maps gave them the wrong directions. The women were coming back from Alberta when an accident shut down the main highway. When Google Maps told them to take the Holmes Forest Service Road, they used it to look for other ways to get there.

But after a big snowstorm, this road was only partly cleared, and after driving 20 kilometres in the McBride wilderness in the Robson Valley area, it came to a dead end. At the same time, their cell service went out, so one of them had to turn on their iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS via Satellite feature. They called the Apple Help Center, which sent the police and fire department to their location using GPS.

This feature is a “game changer,” said Dwight Yochim, a senior manager with BC Search and Rescue, the team that saved the women.

This feature has already saved lives in the past. In December, a man who was stuck in Alaska was saved by the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature.

How does Satellite Emergency SOS work?

With this feature, you can send SOS messages directly through satellite even when there is no cell service. It works by deeply integrating software with your iPhone’s antenna to connect directly to a satellite. This lets you send messages to emergency services even when you’re not in a cell phone or Wi-Fi coverage area.

So, the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature on your iPhone 14 could save your life one day.
