iPhone: Apple has been given yet another severe penalty for breaking the law by selling iPhones in Brazil without including a charger with each device. A Brazilian court has ordered Apple to pay a fine of BRL 100 million, which is equivalent to approximately Rs 150 crore and has mandated that the company must include a charger in the retail package of each iPhone it sells in the country if it wishes to continue doing business there.
Complaint against Apple
The Association of Borrowers, Consumers, and Taxpayers filed a complaint against Apple, saying that the company is using “abusive tactics” by selling its high-end iPhones without a charger.
Following the conclusion of the lawsuit, the state court in Sao Paulo announced a judgment against Apple. Apple says that it will appeal the court’s decision, just like it did with the last one.
Apple was already fined for the same thing
In September of this year, it was already fined for the same issue, and the amount of the penalty was close to $2.5 million. In addition, the company was not allowed to sell iPhones in Brazil until it disclosed its intentions to incorporate a charger into the retail packaging of the device.
In response to this, the company stated that, as part of its efforts to minimize carbon emissions, it has discontinued selling an adaptor to its customers. According to a report by Reuters, the most prominent authorities are not in agreement with Apple and have stated that there is “no evidence that selling the smartphone without a charger will offer environmental protections.” Apple has stated that they will continue to sell their smartphones with chargers.
