Is ChatGPT the Future of Work? AI-Powered Chat Technology May Disrupt 50% of Job Tasks, According to OpenAI Study

ChatGPT

ChatGPT: Will OpenAI’s ChatGPT take your place? According to a new report from the company, AI-powered chat technology might have a significant impact on 19% of American jobs. The AI-powered ChatGPT chatbot is powerful enough to write essays and marketing pitches, programme computer code, and extract insights from financial reports, and OpenAI researchers estimate that ChatGPT and future software tools built with the programme could impact at least 50% of the tasks required for approximately 19% of jobs in the US.

Programming and writing skills have a positive correlation with LLM exposure

Meanwhile, ChatGPT, which was recently modified with a new GPT-4 model, has the potential to influence at least 10% of the American workforce. “Our analysis implies that the implications of LLMs (large-language models) like GPT-4 are likely to be pervasive,” the paper concludes. Furthermore, researchers discovered that higher-paying positions, which may require the worker executing many software-based tasks, may be more vulnerable to possible disruption from AI-powered chatbots. “We observe that occupations strongly reliant on science and critical thinking skills have a negative link with exposure, but programming and writing skills have a positive correlation with LLM exposure,” according to the report.

Most affected occupations

Using several measuring rubrics, OpenAI researchers catalogued which professions could face the most disruption. Interpreters and translators, poets, lyricists, and creative writers, public relations specialists, writers and authors, mathematicians, tax preparers, blockchain engineers, accountants and auditors, and journalists were among the most affected occupations.

ChatGPT is intelligent enough to fully automate some tasks

The other difficulty is that GPT has demonstrated that it can make blatant mistakes, such as making up information, necessitating the use of a human to oversee the task. That is a factor that the study was unable to account for. Furthermore, the study only looked at whether ChatGPT could shorten the time required to do certain tasks by occupation. This does not imply that ChatGPT is intelligent enough to fully automate some tasks.

ChatGPT and its future incarnations will change the way people work

Yet, the researchers believe ChatGPT and its future incarnations will change the way people work. As a result, society and policymakers must prepare. “Although LLMs’ capabilities have steadily increased over time, their expanding economic influence is projected to endure and grow even if we suspend the creation of new capabilities today,” the research notes.
