Qualcomm, one of the biggest chipset manufacturers in the world is reportedly targeting the Indian market. The chipmaker apparently planning to launch a new processor for the entry-level 5G smartphones. It’s interesting to note that the company has already collaborated with other OEMs and Reliance Jio, the biggest telecom provider in India, to create a new 5G phone for the masses in India. This collaboration will fuel the transition from 2G to 5G smartphones in India.
Jio and Qualcomm Working on a Budget 5G Smartphone
The upcoming budget device is expected to carry SA-2Rx capability. In other words, the device will come with 2 5G antennas. The reduction in antennas will contribute to cost-cutting for the upcoming device even without any notable difference in 5G connectivity.
Jio 5G Smartphone Expected to Cost Around Rs 8000
The upcoming 5G device is expected to come with a price tag of around USD 99 roughly Rs. 8200 in India. This device will fuel India’s transition to 5G connectivity. Qualcomm has also announced that it is investing and focusing heavily on supplementing the transition from 4G devices to 5G devices by making cost-effective 5G chips.
Qualcomm’s Official Statement
“We estimate that a sub-$99 smartphone could bring 5G to as many as 2.8 billion people, based on GSMA data. That’s truly massive. With a single device, billions more could soon have access to 5X faster data speeds compared to 4G LTE. That means better, more reliable access to essential services like healthcare, banking and emergency aid. It also opens up untold possibilities for business, communities and people,” noted Alex Katouzian, Group GM of Mobile, Compete XR, Voice & Music and Wearables Busines at Qualcomm.
