Artificial Intelligence: Chief of Meta AI Yann LeCun has expressed confidence that open-source AI systems won’t be used by terrorists or criminals to cause havoc on the world. LeCun maintained that the sheer amount of resources needed for this kind of project makes it extremely unlikely.
Meta’s chief AI scientist says terrorists will not take over the world with AI
LeCun stated that carrying out this kind of evil scheme would require 2,000 GPUs to be hidden away from the prying eyes of the government, a sizable sum of money, and a group of extremely competent people to complete the job. This claim draws attention to the significant obstacles that would keep criminals out of open-source AI systems.
LeCun said that even wealthy states will probably encounter enormous difficulties in trying to regulate open-source AI. He pointed out that existing embargoes, such as the US export limits on AI chips, could cause problems for even a technologically advanced country like China.
Who is Yann LeCun?
A member of the NYU Centre for Data Science, the Courant Institute of Mathematical Science, the Centre for Neural Science, and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Yann LeCun is Director of AI Research at Facebook in addition to being a Silver Professor of Data Science, Computer Science, Neural Science, and Electrical Engineering at New York University.
Given that he shared the 2018 Turing Award with Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton, Yann LeCun is regarded as one of the founding fathers of artificial intelligence.
