Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Takes Potshot at Google’s Dominance in Antitrust Battle, Questions Apple’s Role

Satya Nadella

Staya Nadella: The question of whether Google has too much power over its consumers to keep them away from both established rivals and cutting-edge startup rivals is being debated in the first significant antitrust trial in the US since the Microsoft case in 1998. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified as the key witness for the US government on Monday. In his evidence, Nadella emphasised how several agreements with Apple and other IT firms have contributed to Google’s hegemony, particularly in the search market.

Google Search Dominance and Microsoft’s Search Market Ambitions

Nadella emphasised that Google Search was the “largest software category out there by far” and went on to explain why Microsoft’s Bing search engine was in direct competition with Google in that market. He continued, “I used to think of Windows and Office as attractive businesses until I saw search,” pointing out that Bing does not have to be the market leader to make money.

Nadella’s Proposal to Replace Chrome as Safari’s Browser

Nadella also emphasised Google’s agreements with Apple, under which the latter became the default search engine for all Apple products. He claimed that it would “be a game-changer” if Microsoft were given the chance to replace Chrome as Safari’s default browser. The Microsoft CEO was even willing to give Apple all of the financial advantages of the contract and lose as much as $15 billion annually in order to secure it. “Defaults are the only thing that matters in terms of changing user behavior,” he said.

Nadella’s Critique of Exclusive Internet Partnerships

Nadella criticised the “problematic” practise of internet corporations tying up exclusive partnerships with major content producers, a huge part of people’s online life, without specifically mentioning Google. “When I am meeting with publishers now, they say Google’s going to write this check and it’s exclusive and you have to match it,” Nadella said. He also referred to the idea that it is simple to alter user behaviour as “bogus”. “We are one of the alternatives, but we’re not the default,” he continued.

Nadella’s Worries About Future Conflict Between Tech Giants

Nadella also stated his worries about a potential future conflict between the two businesses over artificial intelligence, which was certain to become bitter over dominating the market. I worry a lot that this vicious loop I’m locked in could get even more nasty, despite my joy that there is a fresh approach with A.I., he remarked.
