Microsoft: According to the president of Microsoft, there is little chance that super-intelligent artificial intelligence will be developed in the upcoming year.
Brad Smith denied rumours that an AI developed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI was a global threat when he spoke to British reporters on Wednesday. “I don’t think that is the case at all,” he replied.
Microsoft’s President says there is no chance of super-intelligent AI soon
Smith said, “There’s no chance that we will witness this supposed AGI, where computers surpass human capabilities, in the next 12 months. It’s a matter of years, possibly many decades, but I strongly believe that the time to prioritise safety is now.”
Sam Altman, a cofounder of OpenAI, was abruptly reinstated as CEO after the company’s board of directors ousted him earlier this month, following a weekend of protests from staff and investors.
The removal occurred not long after researchers alerted the board to a potentially hazardous finding that they thought may have unforeseen repercussions, according to an exclusive story by Reuters published last week.
More about the project
Internally dubbed Project Q* (pronounced Q-Star), this startup endeavour has the potential to be a game-changer in the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI). According to OpenAI, artificial general intelligence (AGI) includes autonomous systems that perform better than humans in the majority of economically valuable jobs.
