Morris II AI: Named after the notorious 1988 internet worm, researchers have created a brand-new artificial intelligence worm known as “Morris II.” This AI worm is extremely dangerous since it may propagate malware, steal sensitive information, and even get past security safeguards in well-known AI chatbots like Gemini and ChatGPT.
Morris II AI worm: All you need to know
Morris II was created by three Cornell University, Intuit, and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology researchers to highlight possible security issues in the generative AI ecosystem. The worm can use AI models to duplicate and disseminate dangerous payloads without the need for human participation by generating an “adversarial self-replicating prompt.” This approach highlights the ease with which hostile actors could use of these platforms to disseminate propaganda or phishing assaults by exposing serious flaws in AI systems.
How will companies tackle this situation?
The researchers quickly shared their results with Google, the company that created Gemini, and OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT. OpenAI acknowledged the problem and underlined their efforts to improve the security of their systems, whereas Google has not yet provided a public response. Additionally, they recommended that developers put procedures in place to recognise and steer clear of dangerous user inputs.
