NASA: According to recently released plans defining its future, NASA proposes to continue operating the International Space Station until the end of 2030, at which point it would crash into a remote area of the Pacific Ocean known as Point Nemo.
NASA’s ISS
Over the course of its 25-year existence, the ISS has been operating and providing its services. The low-earth-orbit modular space station needs to be deorbited safely, so the US Space Agency is searching for a suitable spacecraft. In order to do this, NASA has issued a call for proposals for the US Deorbit Vehicle (USDV) from the nation’s business community.
To avoid populated areas, NASA intends to deorbit the ISS in a controlled manner. The US space agency asserted that all five space agencies share responsibility for the safe deorbiting of the ISS. Partner contributions based on mass-percent agency ownership will be used to fund the deorbiting.
The transfer of the United States to platforms in low Earth orbit owned and controlled by businesses will start with the decommissioning of the International Space Station. With this change, access to space for study, technological advancement, and international cooperation will remain open.
