OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research company, has appointed Mira Murati as its interim CEO following the departure of Sam Altman. Murati, who has been with OpenAI for five years, most recently served as the company’s chief technology officer.
Murati’s Background and Experience
Born in Albania, Murati holds a degree in mechanical engineering from Dartmouth College. She has a diverse work history, having held positions at Goldman Sachs, Zodiac Aerospace, Tesla, and Leap Motion. Prior to her promotion to CTO in 2022, Murati led OpenAI’s applied AI and partnerships team. She has also been instrumental in the development of several of the company’s flagship products, including ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Codex.
Board Praises Murati’s Qualifications
The OpenAI board of directors expressed confidence in Murati’s ability to lead the company during this transition period. “Given her long tenure and close engagement with all aspects of the company, including her experience in AI governance and policy, the board believes she is uniquely qualified for the role,” the company said in a statement. “We anticipate a seamless transition while we conduct a formal search for a permanent CEO.”
Murati’s Interim Role and Future Prospects
As interim CEO, Murati will be responsible for overseeing OpenAI’s day-to-day operations and ensuring the continued development of its AI technologies. While the company has not yet outlined a timeline for the search for a permanent CEO, Murati is a potential candidate for the position.
