Shoulder Surfing Scam: Scams involving ATM cards are common in several nations, including India. These scams use a variety of methods that thieves employ to steal people’s ATM cards and make unauthorised withdrawals from their accounts. Scammers are increasingly adopting various techniques to take money from unwitting victims through ATM card scams.
What is shoulder surfing?
Thieves stand close to someone and watch their movements when they shoulder surf. In order to steal critical information, these crooks frequently, as the term implies, peer over the shoulder of a naive person at an ATM or while they are distracted by their phone. They make an effort to see private information like passwords and PINs, which they then use for their own financial gain.
Things to look out for while using your card
- Thieves can even observe a person entering their password on a checkout terminal while they are in queue at a store.
- A person using an ATM can input their PIN number as a thief stands next to them and watches.
- A passenger’s credit card number can be seen by a thief sitting next to them on a bus or train as they type it into a payment terminal.
How to stay safe from it?
It’s really simple to avoid falling for this scam. Fill out your personal information discreetly whenever you use an ATM or online banking. You should also keep in mind that you are not being recorded by a camera at the same time.
