Apple Inc. is about to open its fourth iPhone assembly plant in India, which is a huge step forward for the nation’s IT sector. The project is being led by Tata Electronics, a major supplier to Apple with a new plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Production at this plant is anticipated to start in November, according a recent Business Standard report.
Expansion of Tata’s Role in Apple’s Supply Chain
After acquiring the Karnataka-based Wistron firm, Tata will open its second iPhone assembly plant in India at the soon-to-be Hosur facility. The Hosur complex, which spans 250 acres, would house a components division established by Tata Electronics three years prior.
Massive Investment and Job Creation
Tata Electronics has already invested a comparable amount in the components facility and is planning to invest an astounding Rs 6,000 crore in the new assembly unit. This investment is projected to generate employment possibilities and substantially strengthen the local economy. Specifically, the assembly unit is planned to bring 35,000–40,000 jobs, the majority of which will go to women. In total, about 50,000 people will be employed by these institutions.
Apple’s Strategic Shift Towards India
Amid increasing geopolitical tensions between China and the United States, Apple has decided to extend its manufacturing footprint in India as part of a larger move to diversify its supply chain beyond China. According to analysts, India’s share of Apple’s worldwide iPhone exports is expected to increase dramatically this year, from 12–14 percent to 20–25 percent.
A Growing Partnership – Tata and Apple
Apple’s grand aspirations for India heavily depend on Tata Electronics, Pegatron, and Foxconn. Just four years after it began production in the nation, Apple has quickly grown its business. Supported by the Indian government’s production-linked incentive plan, the new factory in Hosur will promote Apple’s ambition of moving 10 percent of its worldwide iPhone manufacturing capacity to India by 2025–2026.
