DoT: A new SMS (Short Message Service) regulation was released by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The DoT has mandated the new rule, which requires telecom providers like Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea to halt SMS service (both incoming and outgoing) during the SIM swap or upgrade procedure. Following the activation of new SIM cards, SMS services will be suspended for 24 hours. Providers of telecom services have been given 15 days by the department to adopt the new regulation.
Know the new regulations
The new regulation requires telecom companies to notify clients of requests to alter SIM cards or phone numbers after receiving those requests. The owner of the SIM card will need to make an IVRS call to further validate the request.
The verification process will ensure that the request came from the legitimate SIM card holder and not from a con artist. Telecom companies have been instructed to immediately halt the SIM upgrading procedure in the event that the client refuses the request for a new SIM card at any time. In order to lower the risk of SIM swap frauds and other related cybercrimes, new guidelines have been put into place.

SIM swap fraud: what is it?
Customers now use their mobile number as their identifying number to access a range of services, including banking. Our cellphone number is connected to all security passcodes and data, including transaction messages, One Time Passwords for financial transactions, and NetSecure Code.
These passcodes are used to start transactions, monitor bank transactions, and even use mobile SMS as a kind of two-factor authentication while using transaction services.
Scammers attempt to obtain duplicate SIM cards with the same cellphone number in order to acquire these OTP numbers. Under the guise of a misplaced SIM or for convenience, they call mobile operators and obtain a new SIM card with the same number. Once the new SIM is activated, they gain access to all the private OTP numbers and messages as well as control over the victim’s cell number. moving funds from the victim’s account to their own throughout the process.
With the new rules, users will now be alerted to possible fraud by receiving a message whenever a SIM swap request is made.
