TRAI: New rules from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) prohibit users from switching SIM cards and leaving their current network operator within seven days. Telecommunications companies are now required by law to determine whether a porting request originates from a number that has had a SIM swap or replacement within the last 7 days. In that scenario, the port-out/in operation will not be possible since the UPC will not be assigned.
TRAI’s new rule
The cellphone number linked to a SIM card that is switched or replaced is not transferable to another telecom provider for seven days, according to a notification from the telecom regulatory body. By prohibiting unauthorised SIM swaps or replacements, fraudulent practices involving the porting of mobile numbers are to be stopped by this ruling.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has added new requirements for porting out as part of the rules pertaining to mobile number portability’s revision. Rejecting requests for unique porting codes (UPCs) will now be subject to a new standard, according to Trai. UPCs will specifically not be assigned if the request is submitted within seven days following a SIM switch or mobile number replacement. Beginning on July 1, 2024, the new rules will be implemented.
The reason behind the new rule
Concerning criminals and fraudsters transferring out mobile connections through fraudulent SIM swaps and replacements, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) wrote to Trai in September 2022. The regulator was requested to impose further criteria to the MNP regulators in order to stop it.
