Uber: An Uber user was astonished to learn that he had been charged £35,000 (Rs 32 lakh) for a 6.4-kilometer ride that only required 15 minutes.
The cost of an Uber ride from Hyde to Ashton-under-Lyne in Greater Manchester, England, was £10 for Oliver Kaplan, 22. He intended to go out for drinks with his friends. He discovered that Uber had attempted to withdraw £35,427.97 from his bank account the following morning.
“I ordered an Uber like I do most nights on the way home from work and everything seemed normal. The driver arrived, I got in the Uber and he took me exactly where I was meant to be going. It was a 15-minute journey – tops – and the bill was said to be between £10 and £11, charged to my debit card,” Oliver was quoted.
He also said that, “But when I woke up hungover the next morning, the last thing I expected was a charge of over £35,000!” Oliver got in touch with Uber’s customer service team to inquire about the high fare. He claimed that although the company was initially shocked, they later understood reasons.
Oliver was charged so much because, for some reason, the drop-off site for the journey had been changed to a different area called Ashton-under-Lyne, which is almost 16,000 kilometres from Adelaide in Australia.
Before the funds were transffered from Oliver’s account, Uber corrected Oliver’s fare to the correct amount of £10.73. It said the amount couldn’t be taken because I had insufficient funds. If I had have had that sort of money, I would have had to chase them for a refund – it could have landed me in all sorts of financial trouble,” Oliver said.
He added, “I’m still wondering how the location was even set to Australia in the first place, seeing as it is the other side of the globe. Thankfully they were really good about it, and made it right straight away – but it was a stressful half an hour to say the least.”
