UGC approves guidelines on short-term courses to upscale students' skills in AI, ML, data sciences and more, Details

UGC: Anybody who passes the Class 12 examinations will be able to enrol in short-term, industry-relevant courses offered by the University Grants Commission, which aims to incorporate skills into higher education. Recently, the “Guidelines for the Introduction of Short-Term Skill Development Courses in Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs)” were approved by the UGC. Students can enrol in three- to six-month credit-linked short-term certificate programmes in skill development through these. Read on to learn more.

UGC approves guidelines on short-term courses

In accordance with UGC standards, academic institutions may work with industry players and skill councils to get access to financing opportunities, industry-aligned course content, training, and placement opportunities. Universities are permitted to make policies in accordance with the “self-sustainable mode” in which the courses will operate.

A short-term skill development course in any stream will carry at least 12 credits and up to 30 credits, with an emphasis on practical learning, according to UGC chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar. Such courses, when completed, can lead to internships and employment prospects for students at higher education institutions.

Courses to be offered

Short-term courses on cutting-edge technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence have been recommended under the UGC guidelines. among others, robotics and artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, data science, cloud computing, virtual reality, cyber security, and industrial automation. Among the recommended courses on the list of short-term certificate courses is a course on “Yogic Sciences.”
