Rashmika Mandanna Deepfake Controversy: With the Rapid advancement in technology in the modern world. We frequently come across several events of misusing the new technology with the wrong intentions. A new incident of such misuse happened earlier this week with the popular celebrity Rashmika Mandanna when a fake video of her was uploaded on X in which she was shown wearing a sportswear and entering into an elevator. This incident became a topic of discourse on social media platforms. Everyone on the social media platform reacted to the celeb’s viral video as per their own understanding.
Soon after the incident, people came to know that the viral content was a deepfake video as the original clip of the video belonged to the Instagram Influencer Zara Patel. Zara Patel has over 4 lakh followers on her Instagram handle and some wrong doers created a morphed image of Mandanna’s face over the Patel’s facelift.
Government’s Stand
After the new coming into limelight, Union Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, Skill Development Electronics and Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that “Deepfakes are the latest and even more dangerous and damaging form of misinformation and need to be dealt with by platforms”.
The Minister also added that according to the latest IT Rules 2023, it is the role of social media platforms to stop circulating such defamatory and fake content within 36 hours of filing a complaint by a victim.
What is Deepfake?
Deepfake is basically a multimedia content in which a person’s identity (body or face) is morphed to look as a different person altogether. Deepfake was termed as the Synthetic media for the first time in 2014. It was later named Deepfake when an anonymous Reddit user in 2017 started uploading content in the playlist which was named “Deepfake”.
How to Recognize Deepfake Videos?
However, it’s quite a difficult task to recognize the deepfake videos as now they can be also created in high resolution with the help of generative Artificial intelligence (AI). But it’s not impossible to recognize these videos if you notice some details in the video. Check out the ways below.
- Notice the video from the very beginning and take note of the unusual movement of the morphed face.
- Take note of the facial expression of the person in the video and observe the irregularity of the person’s expression.
- Check out for lip sync issues in the video.

- Avoid uploading intimate photos on social media platforms.
- Keep your account private if possible.
