Microsoft: Thanks to supercomputing and artificial intelligence (AI), a novel material that may minimise lithium consumption in batteries has been found. Microsoft uses Artificial Intelligence to find a new material
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) revealed on Tuesday that it has collaborated with a national laboratory in the United States to employ artificial intelligence (AI) in order to quickly find a substance that may lead to the production of batteries that require 70% less lithium.
According to Reuters, scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington are currently conducting a thorough assessment of the technology, which aims to substitute a significant amount of lithium with sodium, in order to ascertain its viability for large-scale manufacturing.
How did they do it?
As per reports, Microsoft was able to reduce the pool of over 32 million potential candidates to just 18 by using a combination of artificial intelligence models trained on data from molecular science and conventional scientific supercomputers. The PNNL scientists then evaluated these candidates to determine which ones to synthesise and test in a laboratory.
At this stage, they have discovered a new kind of solid-state electrolyte, which has the potential to produce a battery with a lower fire risk than the lithium-ion batteries already available in the market.
