WhatsApp: In order to protect Indian users from the growing amount of scams and frauds on the platform, social messaging giant WhatsApp which is owned by Meta has released a set of six recommendations. The business unveiled its newest campaign, “Stay safe with WhatsApp,” in an effort to encourage online safety. Scams of all kinds are common in India. The recommendations provided by the Meta-owned instant messaging service put a special emphasis on WhatsApp’s major safety features and the best ways to avoid message scams.
6 Safety tips shared by WhatsApp, Meta
1. Two-step verification
To add an additional degree of security, enable WhatsApp’s Two-Step Verification function. This feature offers security in the event of a stolen SIM card or compromised phone by requiring a six-digit PIN when resetting or authenticating your WhatsApp account. Keep in mind to keep your PIN private and to avoid clicking on any email links that ask you to reset your registration code or two-step verification PIN unless you have initiated the request.
2. Sharing Personal information
By changing their privacy settings, users can manage their online identity and personal data. Users can control who can view their personal information, including their profile photo, last seen information, online status, about information, and status. They can also manage their online visibility by deciding who can and cannot see them at any given time. Their account can be protected against malicious users by limiting access to personal information to contacts only.
3. Group Privacy settings
To control who can add you to groups, use WhatsApp’s privacy settings and group invitation mechanism. These tools provide you with the ability to protect your privacy and stop unauthorised group membership. If you find yourself in a group that doesn’t fit your preferences, you can leave the group in secret without telling the other members.
4. Keep a check on your linked devices
Review the devices connected to your WhatsApp account on a regular basis. This gives you access to a detailed list of every device that has accessed your account. If you come find any strange devices, log out right away. Log out of all computers using your phone if you believe your account has been used fraudulently on WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
5. Block and report accounts that look suspicious
Although WhatsApp offers a private and secure communication platform, occasionally you could receive strange calls or troublesome messages. These messages might ask for access to personal information or contain dubious links. WhatsApp provides a simple way to block and report these accounts in certain circumstances.
6. Think before you act
In order to deceive unwary people into disclosing critical information, scammers frequently instil a sense of urgency, use impersonation, and construct bogus phishing links. Consider your options carefully before responding to a questionable text or request. Before clicking on any suspicious or unverified links, users should pause to examine whether the request is odd.
