Elon Musk OpenAI Departure: When OpenAI’s ground-breaking AI chatbot ChatGPT became well-known in 2022, it was widely known that Elon Musk was also one of the founding members of the AI firm. Musk collaborated with Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, and other founders for a few years during ChatGPT’s non-profit phase. As per reports, In 2018 Musk quit the business and gave up all of his ownership in the company.
The reasons behind his departure are still unclear, though. While many claim that Musk quit ChatGPT because his other businesses were also involved in artificial intelligence, some left for other reasons. Furthermore, OpenAI has recently provided some insight into the reason for Musk’s departure from the AI firm.
Musk Wanted Full Ownership of OpenAI
In response to Musk’s lawsuit against the AI company, OpenAI stated that the billionaire desired “absolute control” over the OpenAI. Elon Musk and Open AI, the company’s blog post title, stated that they “intend to move to dismiss all of Elon’s claims.” Musk has recently sued OpenAI, claiming that the business had abandoned its basic goal of working for the well-being of humanity by turning into a for-profit company.
In response to these allegations, OpenAI stated in a blog post that they realized in 2017 that they would require a lot more funding than they already had in order to develop AGI.
“We all understood we were going to need a lot more capital to succeed at our mission—billions of dollars per year, which was far more than any of us, especially Elon, thought we’d be able to raise as the non-profit. We and Elon recognized a for-profit entity would be necessary to acquire those resources.” the blog post reads.
OpenAI For-Profit Discussions
The company also mentioned while they held discussions about a for-profit transition of the organization with the billionaire. Musk desired a merger with Tesla or total ownership over the business. After that, he quit the firm and said that he would establish a viable rival to Google/DeepMind on his own.
Reason for Musk’s Departure From OpenAI
In the blog post, OpenAI went on to say that Elon Musk and OpenAI agreed together in late 2017 to move the project forward by becoming a for-profit organization.
Elon demanded the CEO role, initial board control, and majority ownership of the company. Funding was cut during these talks, and Reid Hoffman stepped in to take over operating and salary costs. OpenAI found it difficult to come to an agreement with Elon on for-profit conditions since they felt it went against their objective to give any single person complete authority. After this Elon suggested that Tesla and OpenAI merger.
Then Musk sent along an email in February 2018 urging that OpenAI “attach to Tesla as its cash cow,” calling it the most effective approach to take on Google. In February 2018, Elon finally departed from OpenAI, stating a 0% chance of success.
Elon Musk’s Plans to Create a New AGI Rival
Then the billionaire announced his intention to create a rival AGI within Tesla and gave the OpenAI team his word that they would have his full support in figuring out how to raise billions on their own. Elon stressed the need for urgent billions in December 2018, saying that even raising a few hundred million would not be sufficient for the AI firm.
