Maharashtra Elections 2024: Maharashtra’s political climate has intensified after Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath introduced the slogan “Batenge to Katenge”. This slogan has sparked debate within the Mahayuti alliance, as many leaders, including Ajit Pawar, openly oppose it. The controversy has raised questions about the alliance’s unity as the Maharashtra Elections 2024 approach.
Ajit Pawar Rejects Yogi Adityanath’s Slogan
NCP Leader, Ajit Pawar openly criticised the slogan, claiming it doesn’t resonate with Maharashtra’s values. In a podcast with ANI, Pawar said, “Such slogans won’t work here because Maharashtra follows Ambedkar’s principles.” He stressed that Maharashtra’s political ethos is rooted in inclusivity and development, not divisive rhetoric. Pawar also mentioned that other Mahayuti leaders have expressed similar concerns. “BJP’s Pankaja Munde and even Ashok Chavan have opposed this slogan. It is not in line with our political culture,” he added.
BJP Leaders Express Concerns
Interestingly, members of the BJP have also spoken against the slogan. BJP MLC Pankaja Munde stressed the importance of development-focused politics, stating, “A leader’s job is to unite everyone. This slogan is not what Maharashtra needs.” Former Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan also criticised the slogan, saying it holds no relevance in the state. “Such language will not appeal to the people. We need to focus on real issues,” Chavan asserted.
Leadership Disputes Add to the Strain
The “Batenge to Katenge” controversy is not the only challenge facing Mahayuti. Disputes over the Chief Minister’s post have further exposed cracks in the alliance. While the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) backs Eknath Shinde as the CM candidate, Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis suggest waiting for the election results to decide. Ajit Pawar has hinted at BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis as a possible CM candidate, further complicating the situation. This serious matter is also causing disputes within the Mahayuti alliance.
