Brain Stroke: Researchers at a Chinese university have predicted that the global stroke death count is likely to reach 5 million in 2030.Lize Ziong from Tongji University in her report says that 2.4 million people died of strokes in 1990. This number increased to roughly 3 million in 2019 and is set to rise to 5 million in 2030.Also called ischemic stroke, this condition is caused when there is a blockage in the arteries carrying blood to the brain. When the brain stops receiving blood supply, it stops working, leading to ischemic stroke.
Risk factors of ischemic strokes
Several factors cause this medical condition. These are a diet high in sodium, high blood pressure, kidney dysfunction, a high sugar content in blood, high body mass index and high cholesterol in the blood.Body Mass Index or BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s height in kilograms by the square of his height in meters or feet. Persons having higher BMI are more susceptible to ischemic strokes.
Ms. Ziong in her report also says the incidence of this medical condition per 100,000 people has fallen down from 1990 to 2019. In 1990, there were 66 strokes per 100,000. This number fell down to 44 per 100,000 in 2020.
So, why will more people die of strokes if the stroke factor is coming down? Ms Ziong says that the rise in the number of deaths is linked to an increase in population and ageing. Furthermore, more people can die of ischemic stroke if the above-mentioned risk factors aren’t controlled.
How to avoid getting a stroke?
The Center of Disease Control has advised risk-prone people to consume healthy foods and drinks. Strokes can also be avoided by being physically active daily, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol intake. Reducing your weight and cholesterol levels in the blood can also keep you away from ischemic stroke.
