Three BJP workers, including a local youth wing leader, were on Thursday killed in a terror attack in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. They were travelling in a car when terrorists fired at them in YK Pora area.
Police said the terrorists opened fire at the three BJP workers in YK Pora of Qazigund, killing one person on the spot and critically injuring the other two.
The injured were rushed to a hospital in Qazigund where they were declared brought dead on arrival, police said. They have been identified as Umer Rashid Beigh and Umer Ramzan Hajam.
“Terrorists fired upon three BJP workers who are identified as Fida Hussain Yatoo, Umer Rashid Beigh and Umer Ramzan Hajam in YK Pora, Kulgam, today. They were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment where they were declared as brought dead,” Jammu and Kashmir Police said.
The Resistance Front (TRF), which is believed to be a shadow group of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the killings.
In a message in English and Hindi on its social media account, the TRF said “crematoriums will get overbooked”.
“Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this terror crime. Area has been cordoned off and search in the area is going on,” a statement issued by the local police said.
The BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit tweeted condemnation of the terror attack.
“J&K BJP strongly condemned this barbaric terror attack on BJP Leaders Fida Hussain Itoo (BJYM District Gen Secy Kulgam), Umer Rashid Beigh (BJYM District Executive Member Kulgam), Umer Hanan (BJYM District Gen Secy Kulgam), those who are responsible for this will not be spared,” it said.
