The ‘deep depression’ over Bay of Bengal has intensified into ‘very severe cyclonic storm Nivar’. An ‘orange alert’ has been issued for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh is likely to receive heavy rainfall.
Cyclone Nivar is expected to intensify into a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ and move west-northwestwards before crossing the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry between Karaikal and Mamallapuram on November 25 evening with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in many places across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry over the next 24-48 hours.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Earth Science said sea conditions would be high over Southwest Bay of Bengal and rough to very rough along and off Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, south Andhra Pradesh coasts and over Gulf of Mannar. It would gradually become very high over the southwest Bay of Bengal from Tuesday night.
The sea condition would be very high over the southwest and adjoining the west-central Bay of Bengal and along and off north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry coasts and high along and off south Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts and also over Gulf of Mannar on Wednesday.
Tidal waves of about 1 m height above the astronomical tide are very likely to inundate the low lying areas of the north coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry near the place of landfall.
