The ‘Delhi Chalo’ farmers’ protest at border points of New Delhi has entered the 25th day today. Protesting farmers are observing ‘Shradhanjali Diwas’ today to pay homage to those who lost their lives during the ongoing agitation.
While a media report quoted farmer leader Jagjeet Singh Dallewala as saying that 14 farmers had died in the protest, All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) claimed that 33 farmers participating in the stir.
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court had acknowledged the right of farmers to non-violent protests and mooted the idea of putting on hold the contentious farm laws to enable negotiations with the agitating farmers, which was opposed by the Centre, which said the agriculturists would not come forward for the talks then.
Farmers protesting against the three farms laws have threatened to block Ghazipur border between Uttar Pradesh and the national capital today.
The warning to intensify protests comes amid assurances from the government on the minimum support price (MSP) for their agricultural produce, a concern repeatedly raised by the farmers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused opposition parties of betraying and misleading farmers and supporting the protests to promote their own agenda.
