New York City: According to Eric Adams, Mayor of New York City, Diwali will be a public holiday starting in 2023.
Intention behind the step
Mayor Eric Adams said this long overdue action will send a statement about the city’s diversity, inspiring kids to study more about the festival, during a press conference on Thursday.
The legislature agreed to substitute Diwali for Anniversary Day in the public-school calendar. On the first Thursday in June, people commemorate anniversary days.

According to Randhir Jaiswal, the Indian Consul General
“The Indian-American community has long been pressing for this. The honor enables citizens from all walks of life to experience, celebrate, and enjoy Indian culture and legacy while giving diversity and plurality in New York City a greater significance”. Randhir Jaiswal, the Indian Consul General in New York told PTI.

“The time has come to recognize over 200,000 New Yorkers of the Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and Jain faiths who celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights,” CNN quotes the Member of New York Assembly, Jennifer Rajkumar present at the spot.
The five-day Diwali holiday will start on October 24 this year.
