Republic News reports that India created history with its first performance-based navigation.
On Wednesday, May 31, a helicopter flew from Juhu in Mumbai to Pune using GAGAN technology.
While congratulating the Airports Authority of India for this feat, Minister JyotiradityaSindhia noted that GAGAN satellite technology enables high-quality air traffic management.
The minister tweeted, “The flight from Juhu to Pune made use of the #GAGAN satellite technology that enhances accuracy, allowing for high-quality air traffic management. Congratulations @AAI_Official.”
What is Performance-based Navigation?
According to ICAO, PBN or Performance-based Navigation reduces the reliance of aircraft on sensors for navigation.
ICAO is International Civil Aviation Organization and is a UN body meant for the advancement of international aviation.
PBN has many benefits, such as reducing carbon footprint, freeing up airspace for other flights, safety, reducing dependence on infrastructure and increasing operational efficiency.
What is GAGAN?
AAI or Airports Authority of India defines GAGAN as GPS-aided Geo Augmented Network. The GAGAN technology uses a network of ground stations to provide reliable information to GPS or Global Positioning System. Through GAGAN, aircraft can accurately locate landing strips, determine their flight paths and do more.
GAGAN is a creation of the Indian Space Research Organization. ISRO has sent many weather, remote sensing and many other kinds of satellites into space.
Since its inception on 15th August 1969, ISRO has harnessed space technology to the maximum. Its first space launch was the Aryabhatt satellite which utilized a Russian rocket. In 1980, ISRO developed its own rocket for satellite launches and there has been no looking back since then.
Today, ISRO is a top-level space research agency that provides vital information to civil and military authorities.
The Airport Authority of India is the premier body for planning and executing various airport projects across India.
