Indira Gandhi: India condemned the celebration of the assassination of Indira Gandhi in Canada on June 8.External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the glorification of the former PM’s murder won’t do good to Indo-Canadian relations. This would also harm Canada, the Minister added. On June 8, Khalistani separatists brought out a float that showed Mrs Gandhi being gunned down by her security guards.Mrs Indira Gandhi was the PM of India between 1966 and 1977, and from 1980 to October 1984. She was killed by her security guards on October 31, 1984.
As Prime Minister, she oversaw the Indian Army entering Golden Temple in June 1984 and killing several Khalistani terrorists hiding inside the shrine.
Canada is home to several Khalistani sympathisers and separatists who celebrate Mrs Gandhi’s assassination in June every year.
“I think there is a bigger issue involved…Frankly, we are at a loss to understand other than the requirements of vote bank politics why anybody would do this…I think there is a larger underlying issue about the space which is given to separatists, to extremists, to people who advocate violence. I think it is not good for relationships, not good for Canada,” Jaishankar replied to a question on Gandhi’s assassination being celebrated in Canada. The Canadian High Commission in Canada has also condemned the June 8 incident which took place in Brampton.
